When a person has been catastrophically injured in an accident, there is often times a long road ahead where the emphasis is placed on strengthening and rebuilding that person—physically, mentally and emotionally. In many instances, rehabilitation is a crucial component in the recovery process.
It therefore follows, that choosing from among various rehabilitation facilities, is one of the most important decisions care givers will face. With this in mind, it is important to realize that not every rehabilitation facility is created equal. When deciding upon a rehabilitation facility, it can be helpful to look at the independent accreditation the facility has received. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF)—are two examples of independent accreditation organizations that evaluate facilities across wide spectrum of criteria. If possible, it can also be helpful to speak with family members whose loved ones have attended the facility. And finally, if possible, visit the facility to see the environment and meet with treating physicians and staff.
