Earlier in January, an 8-year-old girl and her uncle were hit by a car in Orlando while crossing Semoran Boulevard near Baldwin Park, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. As of last week, the little girl was listed in critical condition, but was said to be making slow, gradual improvements, troopers noted.
Angel Lo and her uncle Shehan Wu, both from Ocoee, were crossing the street near Century 21 Boulevard back on January 9th. At the same time, a 1999 Ford minivan driven by Iesha Black, 19, was heading south and struck both pedestrians, troopers explained.
Angel resides with her family in the apartment complex across the street, also known as State Road 436, Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Montes noted. Wu was walking her home from a trip to Wawa across the street when they stepped into the path of the approaching van, investigators determined.
The 8-year-old girl has been in critical condition at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children since the accident, which happened around 6:35 pm that evening. Doctors are still evaluating how extensively she was injured and are working to assess any potential injury to her brain. Wu began waking up last week at Orlando Regional Medical Center from a medically induced coma.
While the driver of the van did not violate any motor vehicle laws, police say she will still be cited because she was operating the vehicle but had never been licensed. No information on any pending civil action has been given at this time.
