On Tuesday, October 22nd, police and fire rescue units responded to the scene of a serious motor vehicle accident at the intersection of North 22nd street and East 17th avenue in Tampa, just a few blocks adjacent to historic Ybor City.
A driver in a Honda Accord sedan passed through a red light and was struck by a pickup truck as he crossed through the intersection. Driving the Honda was Clifford Daniels, age 54, headed westbound on 17th avenue. Daniels then passed through a red light. The driver of the pickup was headed northbound on 22nd street when Daniels passed red and crossed into the truck’s path. Clifford Daniels was severely injured by the collision and died at the scene of the crash. Tampa police investigators have not released the name of the driver of the pickup.
The crash occurred just after 5:00pm, impacting rush hour traffic. North 22nd Street at Columbus Drive was closed, along with East 17th Avenue at 23rd Street. Traffic was diverted to other streets around the road closures, which lasted for several hours.
Tampa police have not released any further information regarding the accident. Preliminary details indicate the crash may be deemed accidental and alcohol was not a factor. Any further outcome is pending the details of a crash investigation.
