On Wednesday, October 9th, a collision between a Greyhound bus and a tractor trailer left 44 people injured and one woman dead. The crash occurred around 1:41am on Interstate 80 in Union County, PA, about 50 miles north of Harrisburg.
Emergency response units, including nearly 20 ambulances from five surrounding counties, arrived to transport the injured to nearby regional hospitals. The bus had been traveling from New York City to Cleveland. Of the injured passengers, four (including the driver) were reported in critical condition. The crash’s single fatality was pronounced dead by hospital officials.
According to early information provided by State Police, the Greyhound Bus rear ended the flatbed tractor trailer– both vehicles were reportedly moving at highway speeds. A YouTube video of the post-accident scene shows a contorted Greyhound Bus intertwined with the rear end of a flatbed trailer.
The driver of the semi-truck, Akos Gubica, 36, of New Jersey, explained to PA State Police that he was driving his rig westbound en route to Ohio. Suddenly, his truck was struck in the rear by the bus while in motion. Gubica noted he was traveling at about the speed limit and did not know why the bus struck his truck from behind. He then carefully slowed his truck and brought it safely to the side of the road, the bus still wrapped around the back end of his truck. Gubica was uninjured in the crash.
Authorities provided no information regarding the cause of the crash and it is unknown whether driver fatigue, health conditions, or excessive speed on the part of the bus contributed in any way. The accident is pending a full investigation.
