About Florida Craft Beer Day
February 15, 1897 marks the official opening of Florida’s first locally owned and operated brewery, The Florida Brewing Company. In 2016 Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn officially named February 15 “Craft Beer Day” by signing the Florida Craft Beer Day Proclamation to celebrate Florida’s brewing history.
Florida Craft Beer Day celebrates great beer! This historic day kicked off a movement that would eventually aid in leading craft beer to the point it is today, nearly 5,000 breweries nationwide. Not to mention, paying jobs. The industry fulfills millions of economic and personal jobs around the world. Beer is responsible for over 1.75 million jobs. And of course good people; beer brings people together. The industry alone is worth $252.6 billion to our economy.
About The Florida Brewing Company
It was built in 1896 by Vicente Martinez Ybor and his company and heirs. It was the first of its kind in the Southeastern United States and modeled on upscale breweries in Cuba and South Africa. In February 15, 1897 The Florida Brewing Company in Ybor City opened its doors to the public. The brewery invited the whole town to celebrate its grand opening and it was estimated that 400 barrels of their signature lager was consumed during that opening party. After the opening, the brewery became successful; at its height it produced 20,000 gallons of beer a year. The brewery even supplied beer to US troops on their way to Cuba and in Cuba while fighting the Spanish-American War.
Even after the 18th Amendment, which made Prohibition the law of the land, the brewery survived and was able to keep distributing beer. In 1933 after the 21st Amendment passed, also known as the Repeal Day, they renamed themselves as the Tampa Florida Brewery, Inc. The brewery began to produce La Tropical beer, which was the pride of Tampa. Unfortunately the brewery couldn’t compete with macro brewers and the Florida Brewery Inc. folded in 1961.
After the brewery closed, a cigar company took over the building to keep its tobacco leaves fresh using the building’s brick walls. Then during the Cold War, many windows were bricked over to make it into a bomb shelter. In 1999, the building’s restoration and renovating construction began. By 2001, the building became the new home of the law firm Swope, Rodante P.A.
