On December 20th, 2013, Mack Trucks, Inc. issued a consumer safety recall on a number of its commercial trucks. The large trucks have been recalled due to a possible fire risk and/or engine failure risk. The affected units are semi-truck (cab) models. Mack Trucks says the recall affects a total of (35) 2014 CXU tractor trailers (cabs), though it is recommended that all 2014 CXU trucks be inspected.
In its initial report, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states all of Mack’s 2014 CXU trucks are equipped with an automatic over-speed protection mechanism. The mechanism serves as a type of safety or governor that keeps the engine functioning optimally by monitoring the engine’s speed or RPMs (revolutions per minute). The system protects against engine damage an will cut power to the engine if it detects dangerously high RPMs (unsafe revving). Mack Trucks says the main problem associated with the system’s failure may be a result of incorrect wiring, which may have taken place during an error or defect within the company’s internal manufacturing process.
If faulty engine system wiring is not corrected, excessive and uncontrolled engine speed could cause combustible vapors to be pulled in through the engine’s air intake. If this occurs, the intake of combustible vapors could then lead to engine failure and a consequential engine fire. According to Mack Trucks and the NHTSA, the official recall campaign is set to begin by mid-February 2014. Any affected Mack Truck owners who haven’t yet been contacted directly by the company are asked to contact the manufacturer. View the NHTSA announcement to learn more. Mack says that all recalled vehicles will have the wiring system corrected for free at authorized dealers.
A summary of the recall is shown here and is also posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.
Manufacturer:
Mack Trucks, Inc.
Summary:
Mack Trucks, Inc. (Mack) is recalling certain model year 2014 CXU tractor trailers manufactured June 21, 2013, through October 4, 2013 and equipped with an automatic over-speed protection system. In the affected vehicles, the protection system, designed to monitor diesel engine speed and shutdown the engine should it rev excessively, may be wired incorrectly and may not operate as designed.
Consequence:
Without a system to control the engine speed, if airborne hydrocarbons (combustible vapors) enter through the air intake, excessive engine speed may result in a catastrophic engine failure and/or engine fire.
Remedy:
Mack will notify owners, and dealers will correct the system wiring, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by mid-February 2014. Owners may contact Mack Trucks at 1-336-393-2000. Mack’s number for this recall is SC0374.
