Uninsured motorist coverage (UM) applies when you are involved in an accident with a driver who either has no insurance or insufficient automobile insurance, flees the scene, or is insured by a company that is unable to cover your losses. Similarly, underinsured motorist coverage (UIM) applies when you are involved in an accident with a driver who carries the minimum amount of liability insurance but is unable to cover all of your damages. In the event of an accident with an uninsured or underinsured motorist, your UM or UIM insurance policies would step in to pay for your medical expenses, lost wages, and property damage.
