A woman claiming to be the pickup truck passenger in a fatal crash that killed a taxicab driver in Hollywood, Florida, told the Sun Sentinel she tried to get the driver to slow down and stop seconds before the two vehicles collided on Monday October 7th.
Sheena Rogers, 28, was one of four people injured in the crash and explained to reporters how she allegedly screamed at the pick-up truck driver, 37-year-old Emmanuel Bruce, to stop because a traffic signal had just turned red. The two were coming from Hollywood motel and the nature of their relationship was not made clear.
Neither Rogers nor Bruce were licensed to drive. The Florida DMV had designated them both as habitual traffic offenders and had revoked their driving privileges.
The other vehicle involved in the accident was a taxi cab operated by Frantz Joseph, 53, of North Miami. He was headed southbound with a fare consisting of two passengers, Jesse Johnson, 22, of Pompano Beach, and Jessica Johnson, 20, of Eustis, Florida.
The taxi was westbound around 3:30am when the pick-up containing Bruce and Rogers slammed into the front-driver’s side of the cab. Preliminary details indicate that the pickup may have struck the taxi after passing red at the intersection.
All five occupants were taken to nearby Hospitals. Joseph succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The other passengers remained in the hospital overnight, but Bruce was treated and released.
Broward Sheriff’s detectives say the deadly crash is under investigation and no charges have been filed at the time. No official word was provided regarding any citation in connection with the accident and investigators have not confirmed who was actually driving the pickup.
