Florida Car Accident Statistics 2025

Florida saw 366,300 traffic crashes in 2025, according to data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). That works out to roughly 1,003 crashes every single day. Of those, 2,738 were fatal, claiming 2,930 lives across the state.

Compared to 2024, when Florida recorded 381,423 crashes and 3,098 fatalities, 2025 shows a meaningful improvement. But the numbers still reflect an enormous, ongoing toll on Florida drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists.

How Many Car Accidents Happened in Florida in 2025?

Florida recorded 366,300 total crashes in 2025. That’s roughly 15,000 fewer than 2024’s total of 381,423, a decline of about 4%.

Among those crashes:

  • 157,636 resulted in injuries, producing 238,440 total injuries
  • 2,738 were fatal crashes, resulting in 2,930 fatalities

The gap between fatal crash count and fatality count matters. It reflects that some crashes claimed more than one life.

2025 vs. 2024: Year-Over-Year Comparison

Metric 2024 2025 Change
Total Crashes 381,423 366,300 −15,123 (−4.0%)
Total Fatalities 3,098 2,930 −168 (−5.4%)
Total Injuries 246,426 238,440 −7,986 (−3.2%)
Injury Crashes 160,945 157,636 −3,309 (−2.1%)
Hit-and-Run Crashes 97,999 92,381 −5,618 (−5.7%)
Hit-and-Run Fatalities 242 180 −62 (−25.6%)
Motorcycle Crashes 9,455 8,910 −545 (−5.8%)
Motorcycle Fatalities 598 575 −23 (−3.8%)
Pedestrian Crashes 10,501 10,736 +235 (+2.2%)
Pedestrian Fatalities 678 614 −64 (−9.4%)
Bicycle Crashes 9,325 9,914 +589 (+6.3%)
Bicycle Fatalities 209 201 −8 (−3.8%)

Most categories improved in 2025. Fatalities dropped across the board, and hit-and-run deaths fell by more than 25%. Two categories moved in the wrong direction: pedestrian crashes increased slightly, and bicycle crashes rose by over 6%.

Fatalities by Crash Type

Florida’s 2,930 traffic deaths in 2025 break down as follows:

  • Pedestrian fatalities: 614 — pedestrian crashes represent only 2.9% of all crashes but account for a disproportionate share of deaths
  • Motorcycle fatalities: 575 — motorcyclists make up about 2.4% of crashes but nearly 20% of fatalities
  • Bicycle fatalities: 201 — bicycle crashes increased in 2025, keeping cyclist exposure high
  • Hit-and-run fatalities: 180 — roughly 1 in 4 Florida crashes involved a hit-and-run; 180 of those were fatal

Pedestrians and motorcyclists face the greatest risk per crash. Even as overall fatality numbers improved, these groups remain disproportionately vulnerable on Florida roads.

Hit-and-Run Crashes in Florida (2025)

Florida recorded 92,381 hit-and-run crashes in 2025, roughly 1 in every 4 crashes statewide.

  • 92,381 hit-and-run crashes (down from 97,999 in 2024)
  • 180 hit-and-run fatalities (down from 242 in 2024)
  • 19,519 people injured in hit-and-run crashes

Hit-and-run deaths dropped by more than 25% compared to 2024, one of the largest improvements of any category. Even so, nearly 1 in 4 Florida crashes still involves a driver who flees the scene.

Hit-and-run incidents are particularly damaging because victims may have no immediately identifiable source of compensation. Florida’s uninsured motorist coverage and other insurance options can help fill that gap. You can learn more about filing a claim against another driver’s insurance or what to do when the at-fault driver won’t pay.

Motorcycle Accident Statistics in Florida (2025)

Motorcyclists had a slightly safer year in 2025, but not by much.

  • 8,910 motorcycle crashes (down from 9,455 in 2024)
  • 575 motorcycle fatalities (down from 598 in 2024)

That fatality rate remains extraordinarily high relative to the number of crashes. Florida’s roads, with their wide lanes and high-speed arterials, are particularly unforgiving for riders. If you were hurt in a motorcycle crash, our Tampa motorcycle accident attorneys understand the specific challenges these cases involve.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics in Florida (2025)

Pedestrian crashes actually increased in 2025, even as fatalities declined.

  • 10,736 pedestrian crashes (up from 10,501 in 2024)
  • 614 pedestrian fatalities (down from 678 in 2024)

More pedestrians were struck, but fewer died — likely a reflection of speed and location factors rather than any reduction in underlying risk. Florida remains one of the most dangerous states for people on foot. Learn more about Florida pedestrian accident law.

Bicycle Accident Statistics in Florida (2025)

Bicycle crashes rose notably in 2025:

  • 9,914 bicycle crashes (up from 9,325 in 2024, a 6.3% increase)
  • 201 bicycle fatalities (down slightly from 209 in 2024)

The increase in total bicycle crashes is significant. More cyclists are on Florida roads — and more are getting hurt. Our Florida bicycle accident attorneys help injured cyclists recover full compensation from at-fault drivers.

What Causes Most Car Accidents in Florida?

The underlying causes of Florida’s crash rate don’t change much year to year. The same behaviors appear again and again in crash reports. The figures below come from the Signal4 Analytics Florida Traffic Safety Report, which tracks fatalities and serious injuries by emphasis area using preliminary 2025 data.

Lane departures were the single deadliest category in 2025, responsible for 1,222 fatalities and 4,438 serious injuries statewide. A lane departure crash occurs when a driver leaves their lane unintentionally — often due to distraction, fatigue, or impairment — and strikes a barrier, another vehicle, or a fixed object.

Intersection crashes resulted in 890 fatalities and 4,869 serious injuries in 2025. Many of these crashes involve drivers who run red lights, misjudge turns, or fail to yield. T-bone collisions and pedestrian strikes at crosswalks are common results.

Impaired driving contributed to 633 fatalities and 897 serious injuries. Alcohol and drugs affect both reaction time and judgment, and Florida’s nightlife and tourism environment keeps this risk elevated year-round.

Distracted driving was linked to 304 fatalities and 2,126 serious injuries. Phones, navigation systems, and in-car screens pull attention away at exactly the wrong moments, including at intersections where pedestrian and bicycle crashes are most likely to occur.

Speeding and aggressive driving caused 378 fatalities and 1,055 serious injuries. Florida’s wide arterial roads can encourage higher speeds, especially during off-peak hours when traffic is lighter. Higher speeds turn survivable crashes into fatal ones.

Uninsured and fleeing drivers compound the harm in any crash. When a driver flees the scene or carries no insurance, injured victims face additional hurdles getting the compensation they need. Florida’s PIP insurance system provides some baseline protection, but it’s often not enough in serious crashes.
