On Friday, October 18th, police were called to the scene of yet another fatal traffic in St. Petersburg. A man driving a sedan was killed instantly when his vehicle was struck by a pickup truck.
Joes Fernandez II, age 29 of St. Petersburg, was headed northbound in his blue Kia Spectra sedan on Fourth Street right around 10:00 p.m. A black Dodge Ram pickup, driven by Shawn Meader, age 43 of Tampa, struck the front left side of the Kia sedan. The pickup was headed southbound on Fourth Street when its driver attempted to turn left onto 41st avenue north. Fernandez was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by emergency response units.
Authorities have not released any additional details about the crash. No information was provided indicating whether or not alcohol was a factor in the crash. It is unconfirmed whether there was a traffic signal at the intersection and why the driver of the pickup turned into the path of the oncoming Kia sedan. Any charges or assignments of fault are presently unknown and are pending the outcome of an official accident investigation.
Jose Fernandez II was a broadcast support member for CBS Radio / Tampa and WLLD (WiLD 94.1 FM). Fernandez was apparently on his way to a remote broadcast assignment on the night of the 18th. He was headed to work on what would have been about a ten minute commute to the broadcast location when the tragic accident took his life suddenly.
