Swope, Rodante P.A., a civil litigation law firm which handles catastrophic injury, insurance bad faith and appellate cases, is proud to announce that practicing attorney, Elizete Velado was recently published in the Florida State University College of Law’s Journal of Transnational Law & Policy. Her article entitled, “Shifting Gears: Improving Anti-Trafficking Efforts Through a Shift in Policy Focus,” offers a comprehensive review of current international human trafficking legislation, explores limitations inherent within the existing framework, and provides insight as to how a policy shift would further protect human trafficking victims while at the same time advancing the prosecution of human traffickers.
In her article, Velado addresses shortcomings in U.S. law and the Palermo Protocol to adequately address the complexities of human trafficking and to protect the ‘multi-faceted needs’ of human trafficking victims. Velado examines various international approaches to combat human trafficking and provides recommendations for improving upon the current U.S. anti-trafficking legislation by “shifting the focus of anti-trafficking efforts away from prosecution somewhat and towards victim protection.”
Ms. Velado earned her Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Florida State University and later earned her Juris Doctor and International Law Certificate, cum laude, from Florida State University College of Law. A fierce advocate for international human rights, Velado drew upon this passion to win The Human Trafficking Book Award in 2012 and The Immigration Law Book Award in 2010. Since joining Swope, Rodante P.A. in 2012, she has continued her pursuit of justice by protecting the legal rights of those who have been catastrophically injured or been mistreated by an insurance company.
