The Swope Rodante Vanguard Award Selection Board is happy to announce that Newsome High School Junior, William Proctor, has been selected as the April Student Athlete of the Month. The mission of The Swope Rodante Vanguard Award is to celebrate outstanding high school student athletes and coaches throughout Hillsborough County. William was presented the award as well as a $1,000 check to be donated to the school’s Athletic Department during the Senior Pep Rally May 9, 2016.
William has been part of the varsity track team since his freshman year. He was nominated by his coach, Kevin Sharpe, for his leadership in the field, commitment to excel, and for his kindness and caring heart towards his teammates and peers. William placed third in the 2014 District meet in low hurdles and placed third in high hurdles in the 2015 District meet. William has won almost every meet this year in both high and low hurdles and is the 2016 District Champion for both, qualifying him for this year’s regionals.
A true example of a Swope Rodante Vanguard Award Student Athlete of the Month, William volunteers for Relay for Life, numerous school activities, and has been elected as the student government president for next year. Even with his busy schedule, William has excelled in academics and maintained a 3.77 GPA. After he graduates Newsome High School, William will be continuing his education by attending college.
